When moving house, whether it's across Brisbane or the world, it's inevitable you'll have to pack some boxes. But some boxes are better than others...

Did you know it wasn't until 1817 that the first commercial cardboard box was produced in England, more than two hundred years after the Chinese first invented cardboard?

Cardboard boxes have come a long way since they were first introduced with removal companies investing time and money into new technologies to make boxes bigger and better.

MiniMovers Packing Division Coordinator, Darren Ham says, "There are benefits to using specifically designed removal boxes instead of old fruit cartons or plastic bags."

Specifically designed removal boxes are boxes which are designed to withstand a move, and are often stronger and more durable.

Removal companies may even have the option for boxes that are easy stacking. With ordinary boxes, stacking may be difficult because they don't always fit evenly, but with easy stack boxes they are designed so no matter what combination you use them in, they will always be of equal height and width. The benefit to evenly stacking boxes is you or the removalists don't have to waste time or money shuffling boxes around trying to get them to fit into the truck.

With the wide range of removal boxes on the market MiniMovers suggest looking into these specifically designed boxes to make your move a little bit easier.

  • Portable wardrobes are exactly that - a portable wardrobe. Often there is a metal bar at the top of the box allowing coat hangers to be hung and clothes stored during a move. Portable wardrobes offer the consumer the ability to transport clothing safely without having to fold clothes and risk damage to garments.
  • Wine and book boxes are designed to be smaller and more durable for these heavier items. They are design to be easier to carry and handle, and it is because of their sturdy base that they are perfect for breakable items such as wine bottles.
  • Standard removal cartons have been designed to hold most household items. Consumer should purchase a mix of small or large sized removal cartons to suit their needs.

As well as boxes, you might also want to buy a range of packing materials to protect your goods. Think about whether you need bubble wrap, butcher's paper (for wrapping fragile items without the ink of newspapers), marking pens, stickers for identification or mattress bags.

Here are some questions to ask your removal company.

  • Do they offer the option to purchase removal boxes at the time of booking?
  • Does the company buy back unused boxes?
  • Does the company sell second hand boxes? It's often a cheaper way to go if you're trying to keep costs down.
  • Does the company offer packing material packages made up of everything you'll need to pack? This is often a cheaper way of buying your packing materials if you have nothing to start with, and companies that do offer these packages have different size packs to suit different size moves.
